A staggering 70% of women experience domestic violence or sexual assault before entering the prison’s unforgiving walls. While in prison, inmates are extorted for their free labor so prisons and corporations can make the highest profit; they have bypassed slavery laws with mass incarceration. Elizabeth Mikotowicz is one of those who slipped through the cracks that society failed to fill. She was thrust into a life of generational trauma: getting pregnant at a young age by dangerous men.

About The Author

Elizabeth Mikotowicz

Elizabeth was born in Quincy, IL, and adopted by a couple living in Brooklyn, NY, at two weeks old. They moved to Maine when she was still a toddler. She reconnected with her biological family in her senior year in high school. She was released from federal prison six years ago. She has stayed sober and won writing contests that got her poetry published. After painting murals as a federal inmate, she has had art shows in the community.

She launched EPM Clothing, an environmentally friendly clothing brand (which also comes in plus sizes) based on her art. She has worked with Maine state representatives to get better bills on the table – some passed.
